Care and Feeding of the Mature Singing Voice - June 3 & 4, 2011
With people living longer and more active lives in their retirement years, there has been a boom in participation in choirs and instrumental ensembles in the past years.
Along with the great spirit and dedication that the older generation brings to these groups comes a special consideration for their voices. Many singers who were wonderful soloists and chorus members now feel as though they might have "lost step" with the voice and breathing.
Although sometimes hard to face, these sessions approach not only the physical reasons why voices change as they get older, but how to regain some of the technique and the emotional elements of these situations.
Workshop for Choir Directors Working with Mature Singers Friday, June 3 | 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. | $25
In this evening session there will be an overview of the biological changes to the voice and the body as it ages. This will help conductors understand the limitations of some singers in their ensembles and how they can help them participate in a healthy manner. Examples of vocal exercises will be presented as well as a brainstorming session on development of additional exercises that will assist your individual singers. Finally, an exploration and reading session of choral works that are appropriate for mature choirs will conclude the evening.
Workshop for Singers Care and Feeding of the Mature Singing Voice Saturday, June 4 | 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. | $35 Lunch on your own. Space is limited; register early!
In this day-long session, we will explore how the voice changes as we age, as well as techniques to help keep the voice agile through that aging process. Breathing and foundational vocal technique will be stressed as well as how to approach how you sing in the choral rehearsal. There will be opportunities for questions and discussion of vocal concerns.
Private half-hour sessions are available during the day on Friday with Heather on a first-come, first-served basis for $20. Please Note: Heather's schedule on Friday is full. Appointments may be available on Sunday or Monday. Please call Scott Hagler directly at (970) 247-1129, ext. 14.
