The DanceWright Project & Labayen Dance/SF Joint Summer and Fall 2011 Season
Labayen Dance/SF and The DanceWright Project present their Spring 2011 Season at Dance Mission Theater. The evening will feature new works by Enrico Labayen of Labayen Dance/SF and Jamie Ray Wright of The DanceWright Project.
Labayen Dance/SF will present the world premiere of Flood Plain Series #3: "...hold me, neighbor, in this storm..." from award winning choreographer, Enrico Labayen. Flood Plain #1: "Mugam Beyati Shiraz" & # 2: "Raga Mishra Bhairavi" received its world premiere in January 2010 and was hailed by critics as " Labayen at his most sophisticated, allowing the movement to be nuanced and textured while flowing organically from one choreographic idea to the next." The latest of the series, Flood Plain #3: "...hold me, neighbor, in this storm ..." is the third of a series of twelve Flood Plain dances inspired by Eastern European traditional and contemporary music. The new work investigates questions and reveals the nature of relationships with one another and with the world at large. The company uses striking and lush movement, in combination with Asian movement canon, contemporary dance genre and ballet to deliver exuberant, thoughtful and at times humorous dances full of dramatic imagery and visual poetry.
Plus the premiere of "Danzon" choreographed by dance artist, Victor Talledos. Originally from Mexico, Victor is inspired by Mexican folk dance about Mexican women --- their beauty, strength, pride and the important role they play in the Mexican "machismo" society . The work is an ode to the respect, passion and dedication that Mexicans have to those women that we love, these women can be a Mother, grandmother, daughter, friend, sister, or a loved one. "Danzon" is accompanied by the music of Mexican composer Arturo Marquez.
The DanceWright Project will present the world premiere of "Divine Journey." The story will follow a journey of an archangel who escapes heaven and comes to earth to experience humanity. The story is allegorical to the general loneliness felt by many of us, even within a crowd. The inspiration for the work is the German neo-expressionist films of the 1980s "Inferno" by Dante. The movement will include ballet, modern, hip hop, and pedestrian styles to an electronica score and will be infused with humor. The DanceWright Project will also present surprise work from their repertoire.
