Rainier Walk & Talk
Keynote Speaker: Seattle Councilmember Mike O'Brien
Beginning at the future area of the Rainier Station, learn about the history of the buildings and the civic and community design elements in existing construction as well as the future station. The Rainier Walk & Talk explores engineering and architectural design and how Sound Transit, King County Metro, Seattle Department of Transportation, and Washington State Department of Transportation are coordinating and leveraging efforts to support access to the station for people walking. This includes giving priority to buses and timing with light rail, better signage and coordinating safe crossings to put people first.
Learn about planned improvements along Rainier Avenue South including traffic control, signals, and vehicular speed limit changes, and how these objectives support the City goals for Vision Zero. Steps from this area, we'll reach the Mount Baker Light Rail Station, to be informed by Seattle Department of Transportation and the Friends of Mount Baker Town Center about the proposed changes to make this transportation hub more accessible and inviting.
Our final stop will provide a close up view of the Lighthouse for the Blind, to learn about the challenges faced by their community walking to the bus, as well as the current and future light rail stations. You'll learn about their vision for the area as a place for people of all ages and abilities to walk safely.
The Rainier Walk & Talk will end with a reception at the Northwest African American Museum, with welcoming remarks from Executive Director, Rosanna Sharpe.
