Event
Chinook BioBlitz
All ages 10+ are welcome to the Chinook BioBlitz. Teachers who participate will receive clockwork hours.
The Chinook BioBlitz is a day to celebrate the biodiversity of our bioregional home, Cascadia, in the 100-acre forest of Chinook. We will spend the day exploring and getting to know the many beings who live on the Chinook land up close and personal. As we go, we will share our learning with the wider world with photographs and notes using iNaturalist.
Bring a sack lunch to enjoy together at 12:30. A salad will be provided by the Whidbey Institute's Westgarden.
What we will learn: - How to explore many features of the forest and species you may not yet know - A fun way to engage in the natural world as an individual, family, or group that directly benefits the wider community - How to use one of many free apps to share your observations with the world, to get help identifying and understanding what you are seeing, and to contribute to citizen science - Other resources for taking your learning further
In partnership with SEA (Service, Education, and Adventure), teachers who participate will receive clockwork hours. From 12:30 - 1:30, there will be an additional training in the use of iNaturalist on smartphone and computer for those who wish to understand how to use the platform personally, to facilitate groups/classes, and to generate photography slide shows drawing from the photos of many people. Using the iNaturalist platform, we will learn how to make observations that directly increase public awareness and appreciation and contribute to research by linking to citizen science efforts.
