Four Hands, One Voice: Performer Bios:
A native of Dallas, pianist Robert McDonald received his formal musical training at the Eastman School of Music and the University of Texas at Austin, studying with Dr. Doug Humpherys and Anton Nel respectively. He has spent his summers at the Banff Summer Keyboard Master Classes and the Aspen Music Festival and School. Robert is a strong advocate of multiple forms of classical keyboard performance, including solo rep ranging from Bach to Messiaen, chamber music, vocal collaborating and new works. He recently gave the Texas premiere of Zack Stanton's Concerto for Piano and Wind Ensemble (2012) with the UT Wind Symphony. Robert has performed in recent master classes with John Perry, Menahem Pressler, John O'Conor and Pulitzer-prize winning composer Caroline Shaw. Robert comes from a musical family, where his brother and fellow pianist Alex McDonald was a recent competitor in the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. His mom, Marcy, taught Robert for the first 13 of his keyboard years, and currently heads a thriving piano studio in North Texas. In his spare time, Robert enjoys drinking coffee, studying theology and geeking out to the complete oeuvre of Joss Whedon.
Baritone Tim O'Brien has previously sung with the Minnesota Opera, the Dale Warland Singers, and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra Chorale. Recently he has performed Le nozze di Figaro, Into the Woods, Ariadne auf Naxos and Sweeney Todd with the Butler Opera Center. Past performances include Verdi's Don Carlo with the Austin Opera, Britten's The Rape of Lucretia and the Ballad of Baby Doe with Spotlight on Opera, Winterreise and Ralph Vaughan Williams' Five Mystical Songs with Portland Oregon's The Ensemble. Tim has toured nationally and internationally with the St. Paul-based Rose Ensemble, and he has performed regularly with groups such as the National Lutheran Choir, the St. Peter Choral Arts Society, and Glorious Revolution Baroque. His "strong, yet vulnerable" portrayal of Aeneas in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas was praised by the St. Paul Pioneer Press, and his performances as a singer and percussionist can be heard on some eleven commercial recordings, including the Grammy-nominated Walden Pond.
Daniel Swayze is a pianist, teacher, and Director of the Beerthoven Concert Series. He is an avid supporter of intimate venues; the Jacksonville Review described one house concert of his as, "Enchanting....crisp and impressive." After an unusually late start on piano studies at the age of 14, Daniel began his studies with pianist Barbara Parker. He went on to graduate summa cum laude from Southern Oregon University in 2011 with a degree in Piano Performance, having received all of the department's highest honors and awards. Daniel has studied extensively with Dr. Alexander Tutunov and Van Cliburn Winner Mark Westcott and has performed in master classes with such artists as Jon Nakamatsu, John Perry and Nelita True. Noteworthy performances include appearances as soloist for Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with the Rogue Valley Symphonic Band, and the Grieg Piano Concerto with the Southern Oregon University Symphonic Band, as well as an appearance in Carnegie Hall with the ensemble Siskiyou Violins. He has also been featured in the Austin Chronicle and performed on KMFA Radio. Daniel completed his Master of Music degree at the University of Texas in Austin in 2014 and will continue on to his Doctorate in Musical Arts this Fall. In his spare time he enjoys reading, cooking, swing dancing and, of course, beer.
