Rescuing Rioja
Juan Carlos Sancha, a professor of viticulture and oenology at the University of La Rioja, makes extraordinary organic wines from native ancient Rioja grape varietals that he has rescued from extinction. If you enjoy the red wines of Rioja based on Tempranillo and Garnacha, you will be thrilled to discover an entirely new world of wines -- both red and white -- from the ancient varietals Tempranillo Blanco, Maturana Blanca and Maturana Tinta.
The Peña el Gato winery is located in the coolest zone of Rioja Alta. It is there that Juan Carlos cultivates his old vines and practices extreme minimalist winemaking, to yield gorgeously pure, complex wines with flavors, aromas and textures like none other.
Juan Carlos Sancha is a national treasure in Spain, and an inspiration to a generation of winemakers. Come hear his inspiring stories, watch a fascinating multimedia presentation, and drink his unique, fascinating wines. Light food will be served.
