Lisa Sanders Band at The Grassroots Oasis
George Varga, noted music critic for the San Diego Union-Tribune, says of Lisa and her latest release:
"This veteran San Diego troubadour recently released 'Shiver,' her eighth and finest album. Equal parts folk, blues, gospel and rock. Her heartfelt songs showcase her rich, robust voice with stirring results."
Born in Philadelphia, Lisa Sanders began singing on the street corner at an early age with her older brother Ty. Then her mother remarried, moving Lisa and her brother to Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada where all of the siblings now numbering 5 began listening to music and performing for her parents in a home where music was played daily. Motown, Johnny Cash, watching Hee Haw, and a mixture of Southern Rock, European Rock, Classical, and all things Pop with some gospel music as well were played. That is where Lisa wrote her first song.
Years later, Lisa moved to Southern California where she really grew as an artist. She was signed to Cargo Earth Records Label in 1993 and "Isn't Life Fine" was released to rave reviews and awards. Produced by Josquin DePres which was followed by a rerelease on MCA records and a publishing deal with Wind Swept Pacific. Then in 1999 Cargo released "Life Takes You Flying".
After her 2004 release of "Hold on Tightly" through Lisa's own label Maya Jade Records, produced by the Truckee Brothers, Lisa had a chance meeting with Lucinda Williams which led to a subsequent stint singing and opening with Lucinda. She was encouraged by Lucinda to learn about the Blues. What happened after that was what Lisa says "as a black woman, I had a musical spiritual awakening. It transformed the way I viewed myself and my music forever".
That led to the 2004 release of "Last Night In Roseburg", a CD with contributions from Susan Gibson (Wide Open Spaces), Steve Poltz (Jewel, Bob Schneider), Maia Sharp (Bonnie Raitt, Dixie Chicks), and Guitarist Doug Pettibone (Lucinda Williams, Marianne Faithfull, John Mayer). 2008 marked her solo acoustic release of "Raw, The Sven Recordings" and the 2012 limited release of "Lisa Sanders, The Blues Compilation".
Lisa has had many opening spots with artists like BB King, Lucinda Williams, Bonnie Raitt, Iris Demint, Gillian Welch, Al Green, Babyface, Dave Koz, Joe Ely, Loudon Wainwright, Joe Cocker, and many more including performing at the Lilith Fair in San Diego.
Lisa's latest album "SHIVER" features her Band, directed by multi-award winning producer extraordinaire, Jeff Berkley (Berkley Hart), including uber-talented drummer Brian "Nucci" Cantrell, the sublime Marcia Claire on bass, with Lisa's vocal and comic partner, Brown Sugar (Karen Hayes) along with Corinne Finnigan on backing vocals.
Lisa is currently writing and singing songs for Track Star Music Group on a project for CBS Viacom while playing as many shows across the country as possible.
