Workshops & Master Class with Award-winning New York dancer/choreographer/vocalist Janis Brenner
Award-winning New York dancer/choreographer/vocalist Janis Brenner will conduct her acclaimed Movement/Voice Improvisation Workshop Intensive Saturday & Sunday, July 11 & 12: 12-2pm
Fee for 2-Day Workshop Intensive: $50 *These Workshops have been conducted throughout the world for 30 years and are open to dancers, singers, actors, musicians, therapists, teachers and anyone who wants to explore their creative body-mind-voice spirit and develop a great sense of "serious play." Following the Workshop on Saturday, Ms. Brenner will also conduct a Master Class on July 11 from 2-3:30pm, assisted by long-time company dancer Sumaya Jackson. The Master class in Contemporary dance will be comprised of a physical warm-up and a section of Brenner's Repertory from the company's "signature" work Lost, Found, Lost. *Between 5-7 local dancers and/or students who register for this class will be chosen to perform with Janis Brenner & Dancers this fall, on Saturday, October 3rd, as part of the full-evening company concert at The Dance Hall. *Sumaya Jackson is a graduate of The Juilliard School and has danced with Janis Brenner & Dancers since 2008. Ms. Brenner is also on the faculty at Juilliard teaching Improvisation classes and serving as Artistic Mentor to the Choreographers & Composers Collaborations. She has toured throughout the world in 35 countries and is recognized for her "meticulous artistry" and unique interdisciplinary range of work.
BIO: Janis Brenner is an award-winning dancer/choreographer/singer/teacher and is Artistic Director of Janis Brenner & Dancers in NYC. Known for her "meticulous artistry" (D. Jowitt, The Village Voice), she has toured in 34 countries and is recognized as a "singular performer" with a multifaceted artistic range. Honors/grants include: NY Dance & Performance Award ("Bessie") for her performance in Meredith Monk's The Politics of Quiet, Lester Horton Award for Choreography in L.A., NY Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, The Fund for US Artists at Int'l Festivals, the US State Department, Asian Cultural Council, The Trust for Mutual Understanding, UNESCO, US Embassies in Moscow, Jakarta and Dakar, and a commission for the interdisciplinary work, The Memory Project, from the Whitney Museum of American Art. Her work has been commissioned/restaged on more than 50 companies and colleges worldwide and she performed with Meredith Monk and Vocal Ensemble from 1990 - 2005 & 2014 (recording on ECM Records). Ms. Brenner was with the Murray Louis Dance Company from 1977-84, working with Rudolf Nureyev, Placido Domingo, Dave Brubeck Quartet, Joseph Papp, Bat Sheva Dance Company in Israel, and Alwin Nikolais. Janis Brenner & Dancers has performed throughout the U.S., Asia, Russia and Europe and has been presented by leading NY organizations. The company is known for the caliber of its dancers, its wide-ranging and encompassing national and international guest residencies as well as its "emotionally authentic" and musically diverse work.
