Magna Carta: The 800 Year Struggle for Human Liberty
The Magna Carta, a document signed by the English monarch King John on June 15, 1215 at Runnymede, England, represents a point in history where the destiny of humanity shifted course. The document, signed under the threat of rebellion, outlined the framework within which the English monarchy would be permitted to govern and referred directly to private property rights, freedom from arbitrary arrest and representative government. As such it operated as a check on absolutism and paved the path for both the English Constitution which would emerge almost five centuries later and the U.S. Constitution which follow in 1788. Without the Magna Carta, the freedoms and liberty we in the West enjoy today would not have been possible.
Yet today the Magna Carta is largely relegated to irrelevance amongst revisionist historians and academics who ignore the arduous journey undertaken by our ancestors over the course of 800 years to secure our individual rights and liberties.
This international conference, involving world leaders from five continents and experts drawn from throughout the West, will seek to illuminate the significance of this document for world history, the dangers of failing to recognize this relevance, the centrality of the Anglosphere in the spread of human liberty and will conclude with an examination of how we can work to prevent the deconstruction of this important historical entry in the canon of Western culture and civilization.
