OLA SOL PDX 2015
Olá Sol! Hola Sol! (Hello Sun!)
(A concert including piano, guitar, and voice)
Join us for an evening of sensuous melodies and rhythms of Latin America performed by local Portland music groups NUESTRO CANTO, SALADA MISTA, and DUO BECAR.
Venue: The Classic Pianos Recital Hall is an intimate hall, designed for the listener. It is a perfect venue for a close-up acoustic experience.
NUESTRO CANTO, Inspirational Sounds from Latin America, is a duo that embodies traditional and contemporary music from a wide variety of countries including Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, and Brazil. Their performances highlight different styles and rhythms such as corridos, rancheras, boleros, bossa nova, sambas and valses. The sound of Nuestro Canto is the result of the unique combination of the artistic experiences of its members.
SALADA MISTA (Trio: Voice, guitar, percussion) play a rich mixture of genres, drawing from folkloric rhythms of northeast Brazil (like Baiao and Xote) and MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira). Luiz Gonzaga and Marisa Monte are among their influences. This is a unique opportunity to see and hear these genres as a small-format acoustic presentation. The alluring sound of SALADA MISTA will make you sway (if not dance!).
DUO BECAR pay homage to the music of great Brazilian composers such as Heitor Villa Lobos, Ernesto Nazareth and Antonio Carlos Jobim, playing an eclectic mix of Brazilian styles (like Choro and Bossa-Nova) with a touch of European tradition. ====================================================== More about DUO BECAR: Florence Deutsch started playing the piano at age 6 in her native Sibiu, Romania. She studied at the Scoala Generala de Arte (Classical Piano) and was among finalists in citywide, and regional piano competitions. Even as the Iron Curtain prevented many from traveling outside of Eastern Europe, her skills earned her travel to performances in Vienna and Linz, Austria. She later developed a passion for Brazilian music and is looking forward to her debut in this style.
Sergio Botelho was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and started playing the guitar at age 10, soon becoming fascinated by the sultry rhythms and lush harmonies in the music of his homeland. He later fell in love with classical guitar, and today can feel at home playing both popular and erudite music.
More about SALADA MISTA: Renata Austin (vocals) has performed as a vocalist and percussionist with numerous folk and contemporary music groups including Brazilian, American, Andean, Mexican, and Balkan genres. As a young woman Renata toured internationally singing with the San Francisco Girls Chorus. In addition to playing SALADA MISTA, Renata currently performs with Portland's POPGOJI band (Brazilified Soul Music), and in a family band with her father and two sisters in the SF Bay area.
Peter Fung (guitar and percussion) has been happily obsessed with samba and choro for the last two decades. He has been a performing member of the Manhattan Samba School (NYC), the Lions of Batucada (Portland), and Samba do Coraçao (SF Bay Area). Peter has studied music in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Salvador, Brazil. Among his teachers are Arnaldinho do Cavaco, Jorge Alabe, Alexandre Lora, and Derek Rieth. Peter is founder of Portland's annual Dia do Choro PDX, and a core member of Portland's thriving Brazilian music community.
Esteban Diaz (percussion). Affectionately know as the "Samba Tourist", Esteban is a talented percussionist who has performed with many Brazilian ensembles along the the west coast from San Diego to Seattle.
