Prison Pieces
Kuntz and Company, a dance/theatre nonprofit organization directed by Pam Kuntz, presents Prison Pieces, a newly choreographed dance, performed to an original musical score interwoven with recently conducted interview excerpts from prisoners, prison workers, and the child of imprisoned parents. Prison Pieces tells the story of imprisonment, and its effect, from multiple perspectives, providing a richly detailed narrative told in dance, music, and voice.
To create the performance, dancer and choreographer Pam Kuntz collaborated with Bellingham-based documentarian and writer Maria McLeod, who conducted and edited the audio interviews, as well as musician and Western Washington University MA candidate in musical composition Spencer Thun, who created the original score. Prison Pieces, choreographed by Kuntz, is performed by Vanessa Daines of Bellingham Repertory Dance; Kate Stevenson, also of Bellingham Repertory Dance; and Alona Christman of Dance Gallery and Bellingham Repertory Dance. All three dancers have performed in previous Kuntz and Company productions.
Kuntz, known for her unique and unflinching ability to take on weighty social issues, was solicited by the Flow Project, a Bellingham-based nonprofit that utilizes art to inform leaders on social-global issues. Prison Pieces was created for the Regional UNESCO Conference on Prisons and Peace, hosted by the Flow Project, to be held in Mt. Vernon, Wash. and attended by stakeholders in the prison system.
