About Eureka
CALL FOR ARTISTS DEADLINE EXTENDED TO FRIDAY, MARCH 25th!! Click "Opportunities" for more details About the Eureka Dance Festival Now in it's third year, the Eureka Dance Festival nurtures new works by up and coming DC-area choreographers promotes collaboration among artists locally, nationally and internationally and cultivates audiences for dance. The festival provides a platform for artists to present new and innovative work on stage. The artists receive guidance and mentoring throughout the process by the artistic panel of the festival and guest professionals in the field. In addition, the festival promotes close interaction among the artists, their peers and the public audience, enabling collaborative work across various artistic media. A group of DC-metro area dance artists are chosen annually to create new, innovative works for the festival; taking their ideas from conception to full stage production. Dance artists that participate in festival are encouraged to collaborate with artists of different disciplines and/or professionals from other fields of specialization. The upcoming artists receive production assistance in the form of lighting design, photographs, and video documentation of the performance weekend. During the Eureka Dance Festival process, artists create connections with other artists and with the greater community, sparking future opportunities. The festival also provides opportunities for upcoming musicians, visual artists, designers, actors and more to collaborate with festival choreographers.
The Eureka Dance Festival was founded by Kate Jordan and Orit Sherman out of a desire to take their choreography from conception to stage and a commitment to support emerging artists. For its inaugural year, the 2009 Eureka Dance Festival cultivated six new works by DC area choreographer; premiering the choreography to two sold out audiences at the Jack Guidone Theatre in Washington DC. The 2010 Eureka Dance Festival featured community workshops, master classes, collaborators events, an international guest choreographer from Peru and the cultivation of seven world premiers to two full houses at Dance Place in Washington, DC on December 11-12, 2010.
