Earthwork w/ short Grandma's Bottle Village-Environmental Film Festival
Dir: Chris Ordal / 2009 / USA / 93 min / 35mm Earthwork tells a story based on real-life events with John Hawkes (Winter's Bone, Deadwood) heading up the cast. Kansas-based crop artist Stan Herd traveled to New York in 1994 and talked Donald Trump into letting him create environmental art on a piece of land owned by Trump. The film details how Herd, using soil, rocks, vegetationâ"practically anything he can get his hands on and that his crew of homeless New Yorkers can moveâ"creates a complex multi-acre piece near an underground railway tunnel. A reviewer for Austin360.com calls this film "delightfully quiet and quirky." Sponsored by Bicycle Building Company
Dirs: Allie Light/Irving Saraf / 1982 / USA / 28 min / digital This film profiles Tressa "Grandma" Prisbrey and her large-scale folk-art project known as Bottle Village, located in Simi Valley, California. It covered a third of an acre, composed of shrines, walkways, sculptures, and buildings made from recycled and salvaged items. Grandma Prisbrey herself is featured prominently; 84 years old when the 1982 film was made, she provides a lively, charming, and exuberant presence.
