WINTER'S BONE Debra Granik's powerful drama about the harrowing experience of a slight but strong young woman vividly dramatizes the human plight of the ignored world of rural poverty. Newcomer Jennifer Lawrence as Ree Dolly delivers a riveting performance as the quietly stoic, determined 17-year-old who struggles against seemingly impossible odds to save her family home from foreclosure. Her Dad has disappeared, and the fate of her younger brother and sister, and their mentally dormant mother, is in her hands. Ree's unyielding stance reveals still-strong rural notions of pride, family loyalty and a tough code of honor. In a manner reminiscent of James Agee and Walker Evans' classic book Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, Granik's moving tale focuses on that other America tucked away from sight in the backwash of Missouri's Ozark Mountains. Although the Drug Culture has replaced Moonshine Culture, the hard poverty has remained unchanged. Ree's already challenging life is torn apart when she discovers that her missing Dad, a drug dealer, had put up their home as bail. The sheriff arrives to warn Ree that they have just one week to find their Dad and get him to appear in court. In quiet desperation, she sets off on a search for her father that will take her through the angry or disinterested members of her family, most of whom want little to do with her Dad. Through it all she copes as best she can: teaching her younger brother survival skills like how to hunt, shoot, and skin squirrels. In the face of her tough unyielding stance, begrudging family members come to her aid at the last moment in surprising ways.
