The New GUITARRA BRAVA Music Series featuring Flamenco guitarist PEDRO CORTES
On the last Saturday of each month the new Guitarra Brava Music Concert series with TEATRO Si celebrates the traditions of the Spanish guitar. Outstanding professional artists present their talents to New Jersey audiences demonstrating the diverse impact that the instrument has on the music world. This inaugural concert on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 7pm brings to the wonderfully intimate and elegant Conservatory venue stage, located at 1591 Irving Street in the downtown Rahway, NJ arts district the acclaimed Spanish Flamenco guitarist Pedro Cortes. Pedro Cortes comes from a family of Spanish Gypsy guitarists and began his studies with his father and the esteemed Flamenco guitarist Sabicas. Having toured professionally since the age of 17, he has gained international recognition as a soloist and composer. He has premiered his work âEn la oscuridad de las minasâ at the Teatro Albeniz in Madrid, and in 1992 he had works premiered by the Carlota Santana Spanish Dance Company at the Joyce Theater in New York. He has written two books on the Flamenco, âEl Dron del Faraonâ and âCruzando el Charcoâ, published by the American Institute of the Guitar. Mr. Cortes was commissioned by Zorongo Flamenco to write a score for a dance drama called âGarden of Namesâ which was inspired by the novel "Imagining Argentina" by Lawrence Thornton. He also wrote music for a childrenâs program on HBO called Fairytale for Every Child. He has toured with Jose Greco and Maria Benitez and has performed with such artists as Farrucita, La Tati, Merche Esmeralda, Manolete and the late Lola Flores. He has been a guest artist with the St. Louis Opera and the New York Grand Opera and has been commissioned by and performed as Musical Director with the Guthrie Theater in Garcia Lorcaâs BODAS DE SANGRE. Mr. Cortes is artistic director of his own Flamenco Fusion group, Amanecer Flamenco De Hoy, and also Musical Director of Mimbre Y Vareta and Zorongo Flamenco. Mr. Cortes is a third generation Flamenco guitarists and uses the experience passed down to him by his family to maintain the purity of Flamenco while creating new compositions. Come to enjoy a special music treat on the last Saturday of each month and also perhaps plan to enjoy dinner before or after the show at one of several fine restaurants in downtown Rahway. Venue located adjacent to the Union County Performing Arts Center. Seating is limited. Reservations are recommended. Proceeds from each event benefit in part theatrical programming efforts at TEATRO Si, a 501(c) 3 New Jersey not for profit corporation.
