COPPELIA from the Paris Ballet in HD Cinema
COPPELIA from the Paris Ballet Monday March 28th 1:30pm LIVE as the ballet is being performed on the stage in Paris. Running time 115 minutes including one intermission
Since its creation in 1870, Coppélia or The Girl with Enamel Eyes has been a huge success and has remained in the Opéra repertoire ever since. Considered to be emblematic of the French choreographic style, it has been the subject of numerous reinterpretations and was brought to Russia by famous choreographers Jules Perrot and Marius Petipa.
For this adaptation, Patrice Bart returned to the literary origins that inspired the balletHoffmann's fantasy tale- and to the more bizarre elements which had been edited out by the original creators Arthur Saint-Léon, Charles Nuitter and Léo Delibes. He underlined the depth of the characters and made Coppélius a sombre and disquieting man, emphasizing his strange and formidable love for manipulating objects and beings. Coppélius is also haunted by the image of a woman loved and lost and whose memory is evoked by Swanilda.
With the complicity of designer Ezio Toffolutti , Patrice Bart creates a version which is much closer to the fantastic Hoffmann tale than to the smiling comedy we know. Playing with transparency, illusion and double, this version exudes a troubling and mysterious atmosphere.
