Lisa Geduldig and El Rio Present... Comedy Returns to El Rio!
Comedy Returns to El Rio (every 3rd Thursday) reluctantly celebrates gay pride with its annual The Obligatory June Gay Comedy Night on Thursday, June 18th. This popular monthly comedy show features an eclectic mix of comedians from the Bay Area and beyond and takes place at El Rio in the Mission District, where SF comedian/comedy producer, Lisa Geduldig (Kung Pao Kosher Comedy) began doing stand up in 1989.
The June 18th show features openly gay comedians: Sampson McCormick, Karen Ripley, Bobby Golden, Pippi Lovestocking, and Lisa Geduldig.
Sampson McCormick is a nationally touring, award-winning, stand up comedian, writer, and activist who can make audiences double over in laughter whether he's joking about his whacky and beloved, Aunt Jackie, his twink neighbor, or addressing homophobia, poverty, and religion. For over a decade, he has been a favorite at LGBT pride festivals and mainstream venues alike. His screen appearances include BET, MTV's "Real World," and the Oprah Winfrey Network. He is also the author of two books "Ebonic Faggotry" and "Taboo Village: A Perspective on Being Gay In Black America" and is at work on his third. He has also released three live stand up comedy albums, including his latest "That Bitch Better Be Funny: Live at the Howard Theater," where he made history, becoming the first openly gay comedian to headline the famous venue. Other prestigious venues that he has headlined include The White House, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The World Famous Comedy Store in Hollywood, CA and Harvard University. His comedy offers riveting, refreshing and original takes on religion, sexuality, life and politics--you know, all those things there you weren't supposed to talk about in polite company. http://www.sampsoncomedy.com
Karen Ripley a queer comic and improv master and has been featured on LOGO TV. She is a veteran of LGBT comedy and began her comedy career in 1977 (38 years ago!) in the heyday of the LGBT comedy movement in San Francisco. She has performed at hundreds of Pride events as well as The Fringe & Diva Festivals. Karen just premiered her one-woman show, "Oh No, There's Men On The Land" to rave reviews at The Marsh in Berkeley. http://www.karenripley.com
Pippi Lovestocking has toured the world and had local acclaim with Sasha Soprano's "Drag Queens of Comedy" shows at the Castro Theater alongside stars of RuPaul's Drag Race on Logo TV. Pippi is the drag persona of actor Scott Free who has appeared in films and on TV.
Bobby Golden was born the youngest out of three Persians in Westlake Village, CA. He began performing stand up comedy at the age of 17 and has been unstoppable ever since. He has performed at all the major clubs in Los Angeles including The Comedy Store, Hollywood Improv, and Laugh Factory and has been featured in Palm Springs' Pulp Magazine and Santa Monica Magazine. Bobby was a semi-finalist in KTLA5's "Find Me a Comic" Contest and was voted Funniest Gay Comedian of May 2009 by the Celebration Theatre in West Hollywood.
