Boston's own Moroccan-dosed dub-jazz collective, Club d'Elf, celebrates the release of its new studio double CD with an extra special evening of music for the hometown crowd. Entitled Electric Moroccoland/So Below, the new release represents a watershed moment for the band, with its rich and varied range of musical influences fully captured for the first time on CD.
On Electric Moroccoland the group pays tribute to the Moroccan influences that have long been an integral aspect of its live sound, showcasing bassist/leader Mike Rivard's commanding playing of the Moroccan sintir (a three-stringed bass lute used by the Gnawa people in their trance-healing ceremonies), and Casablanca native Brahim Fribgane's mesmerizing oud stylings. So Below further delves into the worlds of electronica, dub, hip hop and psychedelia that the band explored on its last studio album Now I Understand (2006), but also has them adding elements of blues and roots with forays into Allan Lomax field recordings. Recorded in a dozen studios and taking over ten years to complete, the two albums feature over twenty-five musicians including John Medeski, Gnawa legend Hassan Hakmoun, DJ Logic, Duke Levine, Dave Tronzo, Dana Colley, and the late Mark Sandman of Morphine in some of his last studio recordings.
For these two special shows at the Lizard Lounge, the band will be comprised of Rivard, Fribgane, Tronzo, Mister Rourke, Dean Johnston and very special guest John Medeski, as well as surprise guests from the band's thirteen-year residency at the Lizard Lounge.
Note* The band respectfully requests that talking and general noise level at this show be kept to a minimum out of respect to fellow audience members and the band. Thank you in advance!
