The Seventh Season All Performances at First Free Methodist Church
Saturday, September 19, 2015, 8:00 PM Epic Stories Beethoven: Coriolan Overture Stravinsky: Orpheus Saint-Saëns: L'Assassinat du duc de Guise Dvořák: Selections from Legends, Op. 59
Fantastic depictions of great storytelling abound on SMCO's season premiere. Saint-Saëns' Assassination of the Duke of Guise of 1908, often called the first film score, joins Beethoven's epic Coriolan and Stravinsky's haunting Orpheus, possibly the most beautiful of his ballet oeuvre. Dvořák's Legends are sure to sweep up the imagination of the listener with their fairytale sound and evocative rhythms, though their stories remain a secret. -- Saturday, December 12, 2015, 8:00 PM Inspirations Glass: Suite from The Hours Arensky: Variations on a Theme of Tchaikovsky Respighi: Three Botticelli Pictures
Many things inspire us as we move through our lives, from the people we form relationships with to our own unique experiences of the world around us. SMCO explores the varied inspirations of three composers: literature and film, a musical role model, and timeless works of visual art. A bit of holiday music is hidden among these musical gems, putting listeners in the mood of the season. -- Saturday, February 27, 2016, 8:00 PM World Sounds Milhaud: Le boeuf sur le toit Kodaly: Hungarian Rondo Grieg: Two Elegiac Melodies World Premiere: International Composition Competition World Premiere: Local Composers Competition Piazzolla: Oblivion, Libertango
The winning works of SMCO's second International Composition Competition for Young Composers and the first Local Composers Competition are given their world premieres, mixing in a spectacular melting pot of vibrant music from around the world. -- Saturday, May 21, 2016, 8:00 PM Season Finale Mozart: Overture to The Abduction from the Seraglio Carter: Two Controversies and a Conversation Cristina Valdes, piano Matthew Kocmieroski, percussion Ligeti: Mysteries of the Macabre Maria Männistö, soprano Haydn: Symphony No. 100 "Military"
While Mozart and Haydn infuse beautiful symphonic and operatic music with militaristic fervor, Carter contemplates the inner game of conversation in this double concerto for piano and percussion and Ligeti pushes the limits of the human voice in this selection of three arias from his opera The Grand Macabre. SMCO explores both contrasting compositional goals and the use of percussion in the Classical era and the modern day in this fiery Season Finale. The ensemble is joined by three celebrated artists whose contemporary performances have been revered in Seattle and around the world.
