Round Mountain with Ash(Æ)
Americana meets the neighbors. Sometimes raucous (imagine trumpet and accordion played simultaneously by one person), sometimes subtle (the harp-like sound of the West African kora), Round Mountain connects to their listeners' hearts with great songs, emotional honesty, and an engaging live show.
Elder brother Char Rothschild studied music since age 8, eventually finding his own voice as he traveled from Egypt to Ireland in 1996, and to Tokyo in 1997, playing for the Old Moscow Circus. On stage, Char sings and plays accordion, guitar or dobro, together with trumpet or Bulgarian gaida, and also highland bagpipes. He has studied trumpet with Paul Yutaka Tobe of the Japan Philharmonic, and Zahir Ramadanov of Ansambl Teodosievski.
Younger brother Robby Rothschild has studied many forms of music, with teachers around the world. He has performed with Thomas Mapfumo, Guinean griot Prince Diabate, and Ottmar Liebert, and is finishing a Masters Degree in Composition from the University of New Mexico. Onstage, he sings and plays percussion- the West African djembe and Peruvian cajon. He also plays the West African harp known as the kora, and the Irish bouzouki.
Ash(Æ) (Aurelia Lucy Shrenker and Eva Salina Primack) has been performing as a duo for two years. Aurelia and Eva have performed together in Europe, New York, and California and have just released their debut album. As a duo, the two women bring together a deep knowledge of different vocal traditions, and create something new and daring with each song they sing together. They have chosen the name Ash(Æ) (the joined a and e, officially pronounced "ash") because it represents something of a dual nature--not singular, not plural, but exactly two. They primarily perform a cappella but enjoy accompanying themselves on mountain dulcimer, accordion, and Georgian panduri.
Ash(Æ)'s work is rooted in folk culture and never falls short of being visceral and provocative in their music where the exuberance of youth and the reverence of ancient tradition coincide. A native of Santa Cruz, California, Eva has been studying, performing, and teaching Balkan music for most of her life. She has traveled and performed internationally, worked with many well-known Balkan and American musicians, and lives in Brooklyn. With a foundation in classical voice, Aurelia has sung traditional music from around the world since she was thirteen. Originally from Massachusetts, Aurelia has traveled extensively, touring Europe and the United States with Vermont-based Northern Harmony. She currently performs as a soloist and with Ash(Æ). Aurelia has studied Georgian music for eight years and has visited the Republic several times as a musician, volunteer, and tour-guide. Aurelia currently lives in Brooklyn.
Robby and Char appeared with Aurelia and Eva previously in Santa Fe to a very appreciative crowd.
