The Glass Menagerie
March, 2011 marks the 100th birthday of the playwright Tennessee Williams. In celebration, Theatre UNO, in conjunction with the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival, proudly presents The Glass Menagerie, Tennessee Williams' most poignant family drama. The semi-autobiographical account of Williams' early days in a 1930s St. Louis tenement house, The Glass Menagerie is the story of a family desperate to break free from the burdens of the past. The drama unfolds through the memories of Tom Wingfield, a man torn between literary aspirations and familial responsibility. Tom's mother, Amanda, who yearns for the comforts of her days as a fĂȘted Southern belle, is determined to marry off Tom's emotionally crippled sister, Laura. When Tom brings home his co-worker, Jim, for dinner, each member of the family succumbs to illusions as fragile as Laura's "glass menagerie".
