CIMMfest 2011: Songs Along a Stony Road
Songs Along a Stony Road Documentary, USA/Netherlands, 71 min., Chicago premiere Directed by George Csicsery
Musicologist Zoltán Kallós has traveled through remote villages in Transylvania and Moldavia for decades, documenting the rich musical traditions in these locales, sometimes at the risk of imprisonment by the Communist regime. He coaxes beautiful renditions from villagers eager to display the folk treasures of their homeland. Eminent 20th century composers, including Bartok, were inspired by traveling through this region in developing musical ideas. The portraits of the villagers singing beloved folk songs are riveting and unforgettable.
In person: George Csicsery.
With: "Doina" (short fiction about young piano prodigy, Romania, directed by Nikolas Grasso, 17 min.) CCC Cassidy, 78 East Washington Street, Sunday, April 17, 12pm, free
