CIMMfest 2011: The Shukar Collective Project
The Shukar Collective Project Documentary, Romania, 78 min., US premiere Directed by Matei-Alexandru Mocanu
Combining electronic and gypsy music into an extravagant theatrical performance may seem strange, but The Shukar Collective Project documents how wildly successful such an experiment can be. Unfolding like a Romanian version of VH1's "Behind the Music," the project only reaches its highest success as relations between the DJs and gypsy singers reach the point of breaking. Accusations fly, fights break out, and all the while energetic, jubilant music abounds.
With: "Eyes Manouche" (short doc about Chicago band whose members hail from the Balkans, USA, directed by Ratko Momcilovic, 5 min.)
