CIMMfest 2011: Player Hating - A Love Story
Player Hating: A Love Story Documentary, USA, 95 min., US premiere Directed by Maggie Hadleigh-West
Feminist documentarian Maggie Hadleigh-West (War Zone) switches gears with this film about Half-a-Mill, a rapper on the verge of stardom who struggles daily with poverty and violence in the Albany Housing Project in Brooklyn. Although Half's music and public demeanor celebrate thug life, amazingly candid conversations with Hadleigh-West reveal a thoughtful street philosopher who opens his life to an unlikely stranger, in the process providing a more intimate and honest film about the person behind the thug persona.
