CIMMfest 2011: My House Stood in Sulukule
My House Stood in Sulukule Documentary, Austria, 94 min., Chicago premiere Directed by Astrid Heubrandtner
Sulukule is the oldest Roma settlement in the world, known for centuries as a center of Roma music and culture. Istanbul already shut down its storied entertainment district, removing the citizens' main source of revenue. Now Istanbul's plans to redevelop the area for luxury condos mean that its 600-year history may come to an end. Astrid Heubrandtner's film explores the storied history of this district and the efforts of its current occupants to resist eviction.
