Cheese Tasting Club

Last fall, Bi-Rite Market's cheese buyer Anthea Stolz had the pleasure of sharing dinner with Randolph Hodgson. During that dinner with the Neal's Yard Dairy's owner, Anthea was again struck by his commitment to tradition. Rather than focusing on brand-new cheeses, NYD trains their customers to taste each wheel as a unique cheese, with "new" flavor, within their cannon of tradition. Inspired by their dedication to taste, Anthea also focuses on helping Bi-Rite guests to understand that every make of cheese is a new vintage, and great variation in flavor can occur wheel to wheel.

Thankfully, 18 Reasons is part of the Bi-Rite Family of Businesses and we can partake in Anthea's admirable project by offering this unique four-part cheese tasting club. We decided to buck the market trend of prioritizing new, hot, and young flavors, and to offer instead this chance to take the time to really taste! Each session we will focus on the same four handmade American cheeses to see how they change wheel to wheel, influenced by season, milk, feed, and age. After tasting and discussing the cheese we will spend the second half of each class learning about a different dimension of cheese making or tasting.

Note: attendance at all four sessions is mandatory. Please bring a tasting notebook to record your thoughts during the progression of the club.
