CIMMfest 2011: You Can't Sing It for Them
You Can't Sing It for Them: Continuity, Change, and a Church Documentary, USA, 69 min., Chicago premiere Directed by Margot Fassler & Jacqueline Richard
Sparks fly when Bridgeport, CT's 120-year-old Messiah Baptist Church brings in a new Director of Music to reorganize its deteriorating choir program. Yale-trained musicologist Jonathan Q. Berryman butts heads with members of all three choirs, using his wit, wisdom, and occasional wrath to convince them of the necessity of creating a single choir that can represent the breadth of African American sacred music. In the process, the film presents a historical primer on what is arguably the richest American-made musical tradition.
With: "Mrs. Buck in Her Prime" (short documentary about gospel singer, USA, directed by Erick Yates Green, 10 min.)
