Distribution Workshop Luncheon
U.S. Distribution- Negotiating the Theatrical Agreement
9:00am-10:30am
Speaker Akua Boyenne

All too often in the independent film world, making a movie is not nearly as difficult as securing a distribution deal. Getting distribution is frequently more challenging than raising financing and producing the film. Even so, many filmmakers mistakenly believe if they make a good film, distribution will be easily obtainable. This is a huge mistake. Distributors must feel confident that they can make a make a solid return on their investment to cover the cost and time involved in distributing a film. Although not necessary, having a named director or star can improve the chances of securing distribution. In this introductory workshop we will look at the various ways to obtain U.S. film distribution as well as how to negotiate a U.S. theatrical distribution agreement.

Self Distribution- Exploring Alternative Distribution
11:00am-12:30pm
Speaker Akua Boyenne

Only a small percentage of independent films obtain U.S. theatrical distribution. However, with today's technology, self-distribution is more accessible than ever to filmmakers. Various tools are available to promote and sell your film directly to audiences. Self-distribution channels include: platform theatrical releases, DVD distribution, VOD distribution, and television licensing deals. In this introductory workshop, we will examine the various methods and platforms of self-distribution and how to leverage these deals to increase revenues. We will also look at how to negotiate a VOD distribution agreement.
