SCMS Presents J.S. Bach's St. John Passion
Expect heightened drama when the power and energy of a 100+-voice choral ensemble and a period instrument orchestra come together to present Bach's stirring and colorful setting of the Passion Story according to St. John. Deemed "more extravagant" than his St. Matthew Passion, the St. John will engage you "with an expressive immediacy," a raw expression of the emotion in the story of Christ's death, as told by one fully aware of its power and yet deeply grieving the rejection of its significance by those who couldn't see it. Performed by the St. Cecilia Baroque Orchestra, with special soloists Laurie Young Stevens, violin; Barrett Sills, continuo; James Brown, gamba; Stephen Bard, oboe; and the combined choirs of St. Mary's Catholic, St. David's Episcopal, and First Presbyterian churches, under the direction of David Stevens. With special guests Jeffrey Jones-Ragona as the Evangelist, Gil Zilkha as Jesus and Brett Barnes as Pilate and soloists Meredith Ruduski, Stephanie Prewitt, Donald Meineke, and Steve Olivares.
