The Kennedys - Pete & Maura
This cutting edge hip-folk couple wields plugged-in acoustic guitars, but Folk Music Society of Huntington audiences, like those across the nation, have quickly figured out that Pete and Maura Kennedy defy the stereotypical notion of folk. Over the course of ten CDs and countless touring miles, The Kennedys have carved out their own niche in the indie music scene, somewhere between pop and acoustic rock, not too loud but brimming with super-sized energy. Think vintage Beatles meets current Wilco. With "gorgeous boy-girl harmonies and catchy tunes" (Entertainment Weekly), The Kennedys can always be counted on to bring an exuberant mixture of folk, rock, country, and pop.
Always rolling forward, The Kennedys have gathered no moss. In 2010, Maura released the intimate and insightful Parade of Echoes, a 12-song collection of her year-long songwriting effort which yielded a new song written and recorded every month. Pete completed his solo project, Heart of Gotham, an all-original rock song cycle centered on New York City and the path that all New Yorkers follow in their search for their identities as members of the world's most vibrant community. Audiences can expect an edgy but positive-energy concert with soaring vocals and guitars that ring like church bells and rock like an indie-pop revival tent all blended together, with a different mix of CD favorites and unexpected covers to make for a one-of-a-kind show.
Pete and Maura Kennedy met at the Continental Club in Austin Texas. Within a few weeks, they went on their first date at Buddy Holly's grave in Lubbock, TX, and within a year, they were touring together, as part of Nanci Griffith's band, and as the opening act on Nanci's two month tour of the British Isles. In a dusty little dressing room on the top floor of Dublin's Olympia theatre, they penned the songs that would become their first CD, River of Fallen Stars. The CD was awarded the "Indie" award in 1995 for "Best Adult Contemporary CD" by the National Association of Independent Record Distributors. Ten CDs and several side-projects later (The Strangelings, The Stringbusters, and their solo projects), they enjoy loyal followings in both the guitar camp and the singer-songwriter set. Ultimately it's their tight harmonies, their chemistry, and their unashamedly idealistic outlook that has carved them their own niche in the studio and onstage.
We are delighted by the opportunity to have these exciting performers return to our stage !!!.
