"Girls Like Us: A History Lesson" with Nora Palka
In the late 1960s and early 70s, American music experienced a revolution when women artists like Joni Mitchell and Carole King were the first bold enough to share their innermost thoughts and feelings through their music, Janis Joplin was the optimum voice of the blues and Aretha Franklin came onto the scene as Queen of Soul. The songs they wrote and sang, along with the lives they lived, expressed and affected the wider female experience of the times and with this effort thus created a whole new way of being an American woman. On September 12, Nora Palka will present "Girls Like Us: A History Lesson," inspired by the groundbreaking biography by Sheila Weller. Through a night of singing and music we will celebrate the influence of these women in particular and the evolution of women in music from the 1960s all the way up to our music we listen to today.
