SFIWFF Closing Night: Three Veils directed by Rolla Selbak
Three Veils' is a poignant film about three young Middle-Eastern women living in the U.S, each with her own personal story. Leila is arranged to be married, however as the wedding night approaches, she becomes less and less sure of how her life is playing out. When she finally makes a desperate attempt to get out of the arrangement, things go terribly wrong. Amira is a very devout Muslim struggling with deep, repressed feelings toward women, but when these feelings start surfacing, she finds herself in a battle between her faith and her love. Nikki is a lost soul, acting out her self-destructive behavior as she battles her own demons after a tragic death in the family that resulted in a cold and rather abusive relationship with her own father. As the film progresses, the lives of these three women intertwine and their stories unfold and blend into each other as connections are revealed between the three women. "Three Veils" daringly tackles some of the issues Middle Eastern women are confronted with today and is one of few films, if not the only film, to portray the struggle of an Arab Muslim Lesbian in a truthful way. Written and directed by Rolla Selbak, an Arab-American filmmaker, the film carries a unique social message that any woman can relate to.
