Fil Lorenz Soul-tet - Funky Smoky Soul/Jazz with Hammond B3 Organ
The Fil Lorenz Soul-tet lays down a soul/jazz blend of smooth & smoky Hammond grooves with killer horn lines reminiscent of those backstreet jazz clubs of yesterday! Think of a 2007 version of that beloved straight-up, funky Blue Note sound!
In the front-line are Fil Lorenz on tenor saxophone and Joel Ryan on trumpet. They compliment each other perfectly. Lorenz's attack and energy produce a muscular sound thick with boogaloo tradition while Ryan soars with longer lines that reach for the heights, fueled by a spirited soulfullness.
Jet propulsion is added to the mix by young Hammond B3 star Wil Blades, one of the most popular jazz players in San Francisco in his own right. Blades' fiery keyboard lines punctuate Lorenz's and Ryan's hornwork and helps lift the music's level to impressive heights.
The Fil Lorenz Soul-tet isn't just about the front line. They have one of the hardiest rhythm sections in town. In addition to Blades' keyboard licks, the Soul-tet rhythm section is grounded in the clean work of guitarist Sebastien Lanson and drummer Brian Fishler on drums.
Lanson, considered by drumming legend, Louie Bellson to be "one of the world's brilliant young guitarists," is a formidable harmonic improviser. And Fishler is always rock-solid; a no-nonsense drummer who plays the kit like a workingman. And Blades, of course, keeps everthing funky and jet-set cool, as one would expect from a student of the great organist, Dr. Lonnie Smith.
