Sony Holland - Alluring Cool Jazz Vocalist
Fantastic vocalist Sony Holland sold out Jazz at Pearl's during the release party for her fabulous CD, On A San Francisco High, inspiring a rave review in the San Francisco Chronicle. Holland now returns to Pearl's riding the excitement of a three-month tour of Asia to celebrate the success of her brand new CD, Out of the This World.
She's "[a] decidedly modern jazz diva," says Jane Ganahl of the San Francisco Chronicle. "Her voice combines the pop stylings of Nancy Wilson with the open throated bell tones of Streisand."
"Out of this World is another winner. [Sony Holland], a local treasure, delivers superb takes on such classics as "Old Devil Moon" and "I've Got You Under My Skin." Jim Harrington, Oakland Tribune
"The chills can go right through you." Jim Santella, LA Jazz Scene
Join us at Jazz at Pearl's as smooth and sensuous jazz singer Sony Holland takes us "Out of This World."
Jim Santella offers a review of singer Sony Holland's new CD, Out Of This World that ably illuminates the musical delights this alluring singer has to offer.
Says Santella, "[The title song] features an exotic interpretation with plenty of built-in excitement, while 'At Last' finds the singer pouring emotionally with a laid-back blues texture. The chills can go right through you. Holland's interpretation of 'Skylark' appears in its timeless caricature, while 'The Thrill Is Gone' changes pace with a hot guitar/organ combo. It's on these heated numbers that the singer shows the best aspects of her art: forceful emotion from deep within, along with immaculate musical precision."
Sony was born in the icy north of Minnesota where her father was a minister and her mother directed the choir. Singing has always been a part of her life. Her ardent following was initially attracted by her CD of original material, On a San Francisco High, releasded in 2004. Her performances at the San Francisco Jazz Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival, Fillmore Jazz Festival and sold-out shows at premier clubs around the Bay Area have garnered the praise of critics and fans alike.
Writing in L.A. Jazz Scene Magazine, critic Scott Yanow predicts that Sony's new CD, Out of the This World, will introduce the sultry singer to a wider audience and adds, "Her voice and style fit the standards she interprets perfectly."
The new disc features Sony's delicious takes on uplifting classics like "Old Devil Moon," "Come Fly With Me," "At Last" and an extra-tender treatment of "I've Got You Under My Skin."
Holland is equally at home in Asia. She has performed extensively in Japan, Hong Kong and Thailand. During a recent engagement in Tokyo, she sang for the Royal Princess Masako. Drawing comparisons to icons like Peggy Lee and Nancy Wilson, Sony Holland is a world-class entertainer with a style uniquely her own.
Don't miss her triumphant, sensational return to Jazz at Pearl's!
