Arts-A-F!RE Summer Camp - A Cultural Discovery & Youth Development Program
MAY 23 - AUGUST 5 (Closed July 4th) 7:45 am - 5:15 pm (Extended Care 6:45 am - 6 pm) Ten Week Camp - Weekly Rates Available (Free Extended Care if Paid in Full by May 16th)
ARTS-A-F!RE is designed to provide each child with an uplifting, holistic, cultural, community and arts education experience which will build in them the habit of success and inspire positive appreciation for the arts and African-American cultural heritage. Our primary focus, as with the Sankofa symbol, will be to return to our "root sources" for lessons for building ourselves and our community.
Arts-A-F!RE morning sessions begin at 8:30 with a Harambee Circle for community-building and announcements followed by an array of classes, grouped by age, where Mon-Thursday, campers will rotate to receive instruction from nationally and internationally recognized performing, visual and literary artists in dance (jazz, hip-hop, an), visual arts (painting, drawing, & mixed media), drama (basic theater skills), and oral & literary arts (storytelling, reading, writing, poetry & other literature, and vocal and instrumental music (piano, percussion, guitar).
The Arts-A-F!RE afternoon program focuses on Rites of PassageStructured Trials (classes, workshops, etc) to empower the individual and the group. Covered by camp staff and community leaders activities will include: genealogy, social skills (speech, etiquette, teamwork), business and finance, physical and mental health, gardening, nature, swimming, violence and drug abuse prevention, and values clarity around the virtues of purpose, responsibility, thrift, spirituality, community and creativity. Field trips will be by chartered vans/buses and MATA public buses. Journaling Campers will complete a daily journal to improve their skills in writing, reflecting and communicating.
Arts-A-F!RE FESTIVE FINALE ends the Summer Camp with a Showcase and a Rites of Passage Ceremony celebrating Community and the unique gifts each brings to the community. Family, friends and the public are invited.
Tuition includes: Swimming Fees, T-Shirt, Snacks, Field Trips, Group Classes, program supplies, games, transportation, lunch and more. Discounts in tution are given to members snd to those who pay in full prior to May 16th. Full pay earns free extended care 6:45 am - 6:00 pm.
Additional discounts for siblings in the same household may be obtained by enrolling for camp at the FireHouse Community ARts Center, 985 South Bellevue.
