Homenagem Brasileira with Sandy Cressman - Brazilian Jazz
Sandy Cressman and the Homenagem Brasileira band take the listener on a musical journey through the world of Brazilian jazz. Cressman and her critically acclaimed band pay tribute to the great Brazilian composers Ivan Lins, Dori Caymmi, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Toninho Horta and many others, by interpreting their music in the way it was intended: intimate and melodic, or fiercely rhythmic.
The band features the warm vocals of Sandy Cressman with an allstar rhythm section featuring pianist Marcos Silva. Vocalist Cressman, who has recorded with such Latin Jazz fixtures as Ray Obiedo and Pete Escovedo, has a natural affinity for the music that is well complemented by keyboardist Silva, one of the Bay Area's world class Brazilian musicians. Both Silva and brazilian drummer Celso Alberti have toured with notable Brazilian artists Flora Purim and Airto. Homenagem Brasileira will also feature internationally reknowned saxophonist Harvey Wainapel, another Bay Area Brazilophile and bandleader in his own right as well as bassist David Belove
Once in a while an artist is born with an inexplicable affliatition for a faraway culture. At least that's the case for Sandy Cressman. Born in New York, she swears her heart is Brazilian. Cressman began her career as a member of the vocal trio Pastiche. She began listening to Brazilian music in the 1970s and undertook the study of Portugese. In the early 1990s, she launched her solo career and began performing with Brazilian keyboardist Marcos Silva, a former arranger and musical director for Flora Purim and Airto. By the late 1990s they had expanded from a duo to quintet. They've been winning critical acclaim for their tributes to great performers and composers of Brazilian music and Jazz ever since.
