Marcus Shelby Trio with Faye Carol - Jazz and Blues from Renowned Bassist and Vocalist
The Jazz at Pearl's Tuesday Night Residency for July brings together smooth and stylish bassist and bandleader, Marcus Shelby, with a smoldering dynamo of a jazz singer, Faye Carol.
Marcus Shelby is often called a "Renaissance Musician," earning well-deserved acclaim as a bandleader, bassist, composer and arranger. He's well know as the leader of the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, but Shelby first made his name in the Bay Area as the leader of a fiercely popular trio, earning his spot in the forefront of an exciting new generation of San Francisco jazz artists.
No singer on the Bay Area club scene comes close to Faye Carol's sheer intensity. . . . She doesn't just sell a song, she sells her soul for that song to her audience. And she's an original." That's how the late, legendary jazz critic Phil Elwood described Faye Carol.
Carolâs illustrious career has found her in the company of, and in artistic collaboration with, such artists as Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Albert King, Charles Brown, Bobby Hutcherson, Ben Vereen and Billy Higgins. In 2003, radio station KPFA awarded Carol their Bay Area Living Legend Award.
Together, Marcus Shelby and Faye Carol promise us a great month of Tuesdays, every Tuesday night in July at Jazz at Pearl's, with a sparkling trio featuring pianist Adam Shulman and drummer Jeff Marrs, both mainstays of the Marcus Shelby Orchestra.
Marcus Shelbyâs music career kicked into gear when, after completing an electrical engineering degree at Cal PolyâSan Luis Obispo, he accepted a scholarship to California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles, where he studied with jazz greats James Newton and Charlie Haden. He also spent formative time at the World Stage, a non-profit jazz center run by drumming master Billy Higgins. During these years, Shelby played with Black/Note, a 5-piece post-bop ensemble that recorded four albums and toured as an opening act for Wynton Marsalis. Moving to San Francisco in 1996, Shelby led the popular Marcus Shelby Trio, with pianist Matt Clark and drummer Jaz Sawyer, from 1997 through 2000. Spurred by a desire to explore more intricate compositional territory, Shelby formed The Marcus Shelby orchestra, which for years has been one of the most dynamic large ensembles in the Bay Area.
Shelby, recently unveiled his stirring jazz oratorio, "Bound for the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman." In 2006 he released the dazzling "Port Chicgo Suite," his big band tribute to the WW II African American sailors who were killed in a tragic explosion in a California Navy yard, and the survivors who were unfairly court martialled afterward. Shelby has composed frequently for theater, film and dance. Heâs collaborated with the Robert Moses Dance Company and the Savage Dance Company and the ODC/Theater, among many others.
With all of these accomplishments, it's a great treat to see Shelby back with a terrific small ensemble, backing a soul illuminating singer like the great Faye Carol! Don't miss thei
