Event
Jacques d' Amboise at Town Hall Seattle
Co-presented by the Elliott Bay Book Company and the Pacific Northwest Ballet.
This Spring, ballet legend Jacques d'Amboise shares the story of his 35 years as principal dancer with the New York City Ballet during the reign of Balanchine and so much more. I WAS A DANCER (Knopf) by Jacques d'Amboise is a memoir of a poor kid from Boston (Jack Ahearn) who discovered the joy of dance, was in turn discovered by Balanchine at the New York City Ballet at the age of 15, became a principal with the company at 17 and remained its star for the next thirty-five years.
Balanchine choreographed more pieces for Jacques than for any other male lead. Jacques also appeared in such films as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Carousel, The Best Things in Life Are Free, Watching Ballet, and Balanchine's A Midsummer Night's Dream. In 1976, he founded the National Dance Institute, an arts education program that passes the joy of dance on to the next generation.
He has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards, among them the Kennedy Center Honor, the National Medal of Arts, and fellowships from the Academy of Arts and Sciences and the MacArthur Foundation. He has also won an Academy Award, six Emmy Awards, and the Peabody Award.
Jacques d'Amboise will be interviewed on Town Hall's stage by Peter Boal, the Artistic Director of the Pacific Northwest Ballet. $5 tickets are also available at the Elliott Bay Book Company at 1521 Tenth Avenue in person and by phone 206/624-6600. Tickets will also be available at the door on the night of the event.
