Naked Empire Bouffon Company in the (International) Home Theater Festival
"By far the most socially responsible piece of work I have seen in ages....I am speechless at the truth and honesty and absurdity of this work." -Cohdi Harrell, performance artist/artistic director of Ricochet.
Naked Empire Bouffon Company presents two original one-act bouffon plays in the (International) Home Theater Festival on Wednesday, March 23rd and Thursday, March 24th.
Cousin Cruelty's Compulsion, performed by Nathaniel Justiniano, is a celebration of humanity's most common response to acts of violence, hatred, and cruelty: MORE CRUELTY! Cousin Cruelty can see inside your mind and he gets giddy by reenacting your most violent imaginings. In this show he bursts out of the repressive confines of Puppet Orson's subconscious to play out the audience's violent impulses and what follows is a twisted, yet heartfelt defense of humanity's dark side. Borrowing and bastardizing Orson Wells' triumphant closing argument as a defense lawyer in the 1959 film, Compulsion, Cousin Cruelty's Compulsion is a satirical treatise on the value of life and the undeniable glitz and glamor of a good old fashioned hanging.
Zooka Splat is a bouffon who has been to the future and he's come back to take a sledgehammer to the convenient stories we tell ourselves about how our world will end. Exposing the darkness lying beneath our fascination and dread of Armageddon, he picks at the scab of our collective reaction to the mortality of humanity. Will it be alien abduction and global warming, or heart disease and cannibal rapists? Did Cormac McCarthy get it right in that delightful little heart-warmer, The Road or will the sage foresight of Jean-Claude Van Damme's Cyborg prove to be our actual undoing? Laced with razor wire satire, virtuosic physical comedy and a no-holds-barred relationship with the audience, Boom Bam Static Forever is an unforgettable and hilarious trip back to the future.
"The Naked Empire ensemble makes sure to hold everyone complicit in the ultimate humiliation of sitting idly by in the face of suffering." -Nicole Gluckstern, SF BAY GUARDIAN
A new voice in the San Francisco theatre world, Naked Empire Bouffon Company combines social activism with grotesque satire in original, actor-created bouffon performances for the stage and street. The space is electrified by the presence of the bouffon, making each moment hilariously explosive or deadly silent. No one will be safe.
