Laura Meyer in Concert
The Marshall Grange is hosting a benefit concert for the American River Folk Society and KFOK Community Radio featuring Indie singer/songwriter Laura Meyer at the Marshall Grange on Saturday May 30. Local singer/songwriter David Martin will open the show beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance. . . .
Laura has been performing for nearly a decade, wandering across North America and Europe, playing in tiny spirit store nestled amid medieval ruins, bars and roadhouses, coffeehouses and major festivals like Kerrville and Telluride. For many years she lived at the mercy of tires, tip jars and the kind souls who filled them and has weathered sketchy bar owners, break-ins, snowstorms, ghosts, and hungry nights spent with bed bugs. Out of all of this has come a trunk full of songs about the landscape of the road, people met and loved, and many motels, all sung in what has been described as poetic, lyrical, gutsy, and gritty style reminiscent of Patti Smith.
After winning the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival title for her unique style of finger picking, and Eddie Owen's renowned Songwriter Shootout in Atlanta last year, Laura toured Europe and ended up in Northern Vermont where she joined her partner to write, record, and retreat from the road for the winter. Things did not work out well. When their housekeeping arrangement fell through they moved into an upstairs room of a haunted pizza restaurant where lights flickered, unseen babies cried, and the relationship ended. Out of this was born her 10th CD, "Passenger", an invitation to put down our shields and to honor what is before and within us all. You can lean more about Laura, sample her music and view videos at www.laurameyer.net.
Local singer songwriter David Martin has been playing on the Divide for the last few years and recently has expanded his playing area to Coloma (Sierra Nevada House), Placerville (Cozmic Café), and El Dorado county wineries. He is noted for his original songs, and his exceptional guitar playing. You can hear David's songs and see his videos at www.reverbnation.com/davidmartinmusic.
This concert is an opportunity to see an upcoming local musician paired with a road-tested pro making an encore performance at one of her favorite venues, the Marshall Grange.
