When you spend too long in a place, you start running out of inspiration," said twenty-one year old piano-rock musician Josiah Leming. After releasing his debut album, Come On Kid, through Warner Bros.Records a mere 8 months ago, Leming and the label decided to part ways. "Come On Kid represented me among a major label roster, but I always thrived off of recording songs that they would never release. While the label was preparing to release Come On Kid, I was already preparing my next album." During this process, Leming wrote and began recording "What You've Taken" with Secondhand Serenade's John Vesely and Tom Breyfogle, who have proven their own independent success. The single brings Leming's history of lyrical reflexivity, aggressive chords and melodic vocals' directly to the frontline.
Leming now handles his career entirely himself. He has a residency at Lestat's in San Diego, a viral Internet fan base, and redesigned art direction by Matthew Taylor Ruggieri. "This is how my career first began. It was just me and the piano." Leming made his debut on Season 7 of American Idol where he gained a hefty fan base and self-released and sold over 60,000 digital copies of old recordings on MySpace. Shortly after, he signed with Warner Bros. Records to record his debut album that took over two years to release. Though his time on the label gave him time to travel, explore the collections of Hemingway and seek out the depths of Coldplay and Elton John, he confesses that, "the process was exhausting and I lost touch with my own music. That's the enemy of a songwriter."
He says that this new release will allow him to explore his roots the very thing that caught the attention of hundreds of thousands of fans in the beginning. While "What You've Taken" is presented in a slick, pop-oriented manner, it shows natural progression and hearkens back to its earliest predecessors. "I wrote One Last Song and To Run while I was in Tennessee and had nothing else. I write music because it gives me an avenue to express my emotions." He eagerly interrupted, "I did it once before and I'm ready to do it again."
