This, for me, is the highlight of six years of creating these shows for you. It's a little like being called up from Triple A to the Majors, presenting these guys who are likely to be found touring Japan or headlining at Yoshi's in San Francisco.
When Dan Balmer isn't touring with Grammy winner Diane Schuur, you'll find him teaching at Lewis and Clark College or selling out the house at Jimmy Mak's. John Stowell pretty much lives out of a suitcase, performing and teaching around the world as much or more than he does here at home. Downbeat Magazine said Stowell "plays his amplified guitar as if he were surrounded by fine crystal the type of slow burning, sustained energy that you hear in players that practice all the time."
Mike Pardew doesn't have the name recognition of Dan or John yet, but each of them has recognized his talent: John, by teaming up for the 2007 album "Transgressions," and Dan by recommending him for a faculty position in the Jazz Guitar Department at Lewis and Clark. Scott Steed is Diane Schuur's touring musical director, and has been a firstcall bassist on the west coast for such jazz luminaries as Horace Silver, Joe Williams, Joe Pass and Joe Henderson. This show is a tribute to the great Jim Hall. Thanks to Dave Machado for the idea and arranging for the venue, next to his wonderful Nel Centro Restaurant.
Tickets are $20 each at Nel Centro or from http://www.brownpapertickets.com.
