In Between the Lines
In our latest concert series The Curiosity Cabinet has taken on the unique challenge of interpreting the musical letter. More than a dedication, a letter is a signpost for written history, but a more personal one that is both for and about another human being. Conversely, a musical letter doesn't overtly say anything: it opens up a broad reach of ideas that a composer can comment on. Is it a commentary on another artist's style? His/her subject matter? A criticism or a compliment? While these questions can be answered to some degree, a musical letter's loosely defined nature makes them an interesting and uniquely challenging art form to interpret and perform.
The program for the final concert in the Correspondence Series includes selections from Night, like velvet: in twelve letters by Whitney George, Thursday by Robert Paterson, 4midable4 by Girolamo Deraco, The End of Greatness by Greg Pfeiffer, Love Letter Written in a Burning Building by Steven Landis, and by Pat Muchmore.
