Meridian Brothers // Cigarette // Time Is Fire // Alumbra DC at Tropicalia
Meridian Brothers is tropical / psychedelic group from Colombia. Born in Bogotá in 1998 and based on the musical interests of composer Eblis Alvarez, in the beginning, the project was focused exclusively on cassette recordings and experimentation with alternative ways of playing instruments and electronic media. From a conceptual band where Alvarez played all the instruments, Meridian Brothers evolved into a live combo that meets Maria Valencia (saxophone, clarinet, percussion and synthesizers), Damian Ponce (Percussion), Cesar Quevedo (bass) and Alejandro Forero (electronics and synthesizers). Meridian brothers sound a is huge palette of influences and inspirations. From tropical music, vallenato, Latin-American folk, sampling techniques to theatrical interventions and references of fake characters expressing however a deep human reality. The band has released five albums and two singles with labels such as La distritofónica, El Hombre de la Flecha Records, the New York label Names You Can Trust and the British label Soundway records. In seven years of history as a band, the Meridian Brothers has participated in concerts and festivals in Latin-America, United States and Europe. "Genius prophets of Colombian weirdness"
When contextualizing a Cigarette performance, "ethereal" and "celestial" immediately pop into mind. Their performances are truly something to be revered, and their work has garnered them acclamation by notable D.C. musicians like Sean Peoples, describing the group as collectively being one of the best songwriters in the Washington, DC area.
Time is Fire is a band that could only come out of Washington DC. Rooted in DC's storied post-punk scene but reaching out to embrace rhythms from West Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and beyond, the group summons a kaleidoscopic sound that knows no borders-- a static blast of experimental radio from a country that doesn't exist. Fronted by an Iranian-born Sufi poet and backed by players steeped in punk, dance and experimental music, Time is Fire mixes soaring vocals, floor-shaking funk grooves and acid-laced guitar leads into a mind-expanding geopolitical dance party.
Alumbra DC is a DJ collective made out of DIY diehards which came together in 2010. Their sets can be described as a multicultural variety of sounds. They point to the lack of records from Latin America and Spain at the local record stores and also that the Latino media are interested in playing only the most popular Latino sounds as to the reasons the collective was formed, they wanted to share the missing pieces of the picture.
