Stellaria Voices: Fervor Español
Stellaria is back with passionate a cappella music of the Spanish Renaissance. Join us for an evening of sensual music!
The passion and pulsating rhythms of 16th Century Spain energize this concert with works inspired by Clement Janequin's La Guerre (The War). Hear virtuoso vocal works by Victoria, Guerrero, and Morales, all modelled after Janequin's pyrotechnical Renaissance mega-hit.
The program also features Matea Flech, the Elder's epic "ensalada" La Justa (The Tournament). The vivid work is a religious battle piece a very popular genre in Spain in the 16th century. The tendency of this piece is revealed in its first lines: "Hear, all you people, a contest is announced! And the prize, so one hears, is the salvation of the peoples." Alto Fabiana Katz says the piece tells "about Envy, who, supported by Arrogance, proclaims he will elevate his throne and be equal to the Most High."
Artistic Director Derrick Christian notes Stellaria "is thrilled to be presenting another program of exciting, virtuosic and under-performed Renaissance works. Spanish Renaissance music is so different from that the Italian and German most often performed in the Vancouver area. It is full of harmonic and rhythmic surprises."
