NO IMPACT MAN
The Harvard Club of Long Island PRESENTS FILM + PANEL DISCUSSION ON THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE LONG ISLAND ENVIRONMENT
Sunday, March 13, 2011 at 11:00am Members: $9 / Public $13
Join us for a screening of the documentary No Impact Man which follows one man's year long project to have zero environmental impact. Colin Beavan decides to eliminate his impact on the environment for the next year. It means eating vegetarian, buying only local food, and turning off the refridgerator. It also means no elevators, no television, no cars, and no garbage but he and his family live in Manhattan. So when his wife Michelle and their two-year-old daughter are dragged into the fray, the No Impact Project has an unforeseen impact of its own. Laura Gabbert and Justin Schein's film provides an intriguing inside look into the experiment that became a national fascination, while examining the strains and strengthened bonds that result from Colin and Michelle's struggle with their radical lifestyle change. The film will lead us to a larger discussion of the region's air, water and earth and local projects that threaten or enhance these resources. Panelists will highlight both the grassroots and institutional initiatives dedicated to preserving and enhancing Long Island's environmental future, considering wind power, solar power, air and water pollution as well as food production and local programs designed to address these concerns.
