Duration 1hr
Ticket includes free entry to Human Salvage: a night of club performance, later that evening 8.30pm - 2am) This live performance installation sees Dominic Johnson's left hand tattooed by Alex Binnie, one of the world's most highly regarded tattoo artists. The project continues Johnson's investigation into the representation and decoration of wounds, secular images of disaster, and the politics of body modification. Accompanying the live tattooing procedure is a specially developed sound design and a spectacular trio of performers stationed to bear witness to this event. Departure takes place in TROVE, a visual art project space that was previously the converted steam room of Birmingham's former Old Science Museum. The performance will culminate in a procession to a warehouse for the launch of Human Salvage, a night of spectacular and immersive club performance. Dominic Johnson is one of the UK's most exciting body-based practitioners, and is part of a new generation of artists working in performance; his practice is informed by the work of influential artists who have featured in earlier Fierce Festivals, such as Ron Athey, Franko B, Marisa Carnesky and Kira O'Reilly. Johnson collaborated with Athey on Incorruptible Flesh (Perpetual Wound), a co-commission by Fierce and Chelsea Theatre in 2007.
Departure is a co-commission between Fierce Festival and Chelsea Theatre. Supported by QMUL.
