Event
Arstidir at Middleton Performing Arts Center
Two years ago, a band from Iceland called Árstíðir finished a concert in Wuppertal, Germany and went to the train station to move on to their next show. They admired the acoustics of the 300-year old building, and, on a lark, sang an 11th-century Icelandic hymn from their repertoire. A friend captured it on video... where it promptly went viral worldwide.
Last year, a group of a capella singers at Madison West high school cajoled their choir teacher into coaching them through the performance of this song, complete with the difficult-to-pronounce Icelandic words. They proudly made a video of themselves, gathered in someone's living room, singing this challenging piece.
A few months ago, the Iceland National News ran a segment about the hymn's composer (the words are 800 years old, but the music was written by a contemporary musician). Naturally they described how Árstíðir's viral video brought this song to the world's attention. To prove their point, they showed video clips from performances of the hymn around the world... including a snippet of the video made by Madison West's Chromatic choir.
The fellows in Árstíðir watched the news broadcast and said, "Hey, those guys did a great job! Maybe they could accompany us at a show, on our American tour!"
Imagine if, at 17 or 18 years of age, a band you loved called you up and said, "We saw you cover our song--would you care to join us on stage?"
We welcome all of you to join us for an evening of music and dreams coming true.
