Cut Down
Imagine... Two intrepid explorers enter the jungle, never to return.
Inside they find dancing trees, sock hopping natives, true love, true lust, murder, insanity, forgiveness, deception and a whole bunch of other zany stuff.
Now imagine it... presented for you by BooTown!
Cut Down blends the Greek myth of Ixion, a rash and impulsive man who consistently found himself breaking the most basic customs of hospitality (and paying for it dearly), with the fascinating story of the unknown fate of Amazonian explorer Percy Harrison Fawcett, who disappeared into the jungle way back in 1925.
In choosing this particular story to tell, director Philip Hays says:
"As much as we think we'll learn from our past, sometimes we forget to apply these lessons to our future. This story heightens the 'whoopses' of everyday and turns them into 'oh shits' of monstrous proportions, and there are ample opportunities to find both humor and pathos in the hyperbole. We all make impulsive decisions, for better or worse, and we all feel that thrilling, fluttering moment that of what was a mere possibility becoming hard, irrevocable reality. This play is a string of those moments told through dialogue, dance, and music. Plus: there's a big ol' food and drink party smack dab in the middle of the show. It's going to be a lot of fun!"
In keeping with BooTown's mission of producing in non-traditional settings in order to cultivate new audiences, the play will be performed at Super Happy Fun Land, a venue dedicated to providing opportunity for underground art of all sorts. Also in keeping with BooTown tradition, Cut Down is a devised piece, in which the lines between writers, actors, and designers are blurred. The show is sure to be chock-full of the collaborative invention and playful whimsy that you've all come to expect from BooTown.
