English Portraits
The spirit of Elgar permeates this program. Arthur Bliss found the inspiration for his "Pastoral" during a trip to Sicily in 1928, and subsequently dedicated the finished work to his colleague, Sir Edward Elgar. In the case of Vaughan-Williams, it was Elgar himself who suggested that he compose a choral work using the poems of the Tudor poet John Skelton. Join the Rochester Oratorio Society as it concludes the concert season with these two stunningly beautiful, romantic and vibrant 20th-century choral masterworks. Mezzo-soprano Jessica Best and Classical Idol winner (and audience favorite) Jonathan Beyer solo with the full choir and orchestra.
